UPGRADING FROM 3.1.5 Upgrading from any level of AIX 3.1 to AIX 3.2.5 is much the same process as upgrading to AIX 3.2. o You must be at the 3.1.5 level or higher (2006, 2007...). o Reinstallation is required. You cannot simply upgrade through SMIT. o You can install AIX 3.2.5 directly without first installing AIX 3.2. o You can still use the upgrade utilities to save some configuration information. The upgrade utilities guide and diskette can be obtained through your point of sale by ordering form number SC23-2411. AIX 3.2.5 Installation Tips 1 12/21/95 o You cannot install from a Preventive Maintenance Package (PMP) tape. You must order a Product tape by calling 1-800-879-2755. UPGRADING FROM 3.2 Upgrading from any level of 3.2 is simply a matter of applying the subsystem PTFs. Follow the instructions pro- vided with your media, with emphasis on the following. o Make sure you have a current system backup. Refer to the "Backing Up Your System" section of the Installation Guide for specific instructions. o Reinstallation is NOT necessary unless you do not have the minimum amount of free space necessary to install the update. o Your previous configuration is preserved. Installation Problem If you are using AIX 3.2.5 product media labeled "AIX 3.2.5 (3250-01-04)", dated between 6/3/94 and 7/29/94, installa- tion of the Application Installation Utilities PTF (U428228) may fail on systems with an installed AIX 3.2 level PRIOR TO AIX 3.2.4. This problem is resolved on currently available media labeled "AIX 3.2.5 (3250-02-05)". You can check the level of your installed AIX by trying the "oslevel" command. If the oslevel command is installed on your system, this problem will not occur. You can resolve the problem by either of the following methods: o Call 800-879-2755 (in the U.S.) and request replacement product media. o Install a later level of the Application Installation Utilities PTF (U430214 or later). /USR CLIENT INSTALLATION If you are installing a /usr client on AIX 3.2.5, you MUST use the procedure described in document #2577 from 1-800-IBM-4FAX. (Outside the U.S., you can order the docu- ment by calling 415-855-4FAX from a fax machine phone.) INSTALLATION TIPS o Backup your system! o The following user-configurable files may be overwritten during installation of the 3.2.5 Update. AIX 3.2.5 Installation Tips 2 12/21/95 /etc/sendmail.cf /etc/xlc.cfg /usr/lib/X11/xdm/* /usr/lib/X11/app-defaults/* /usr/lib/X11/system.mwmrc /usr/lib/X11/system.twmrc /usr/lpp/X11/defaults/* Back up copies of those files which you have modified and merge your changes after installation. o Check the state of existing PTFs on your system prior to starting the installation of the 3.2.5 Update. - Run "lppchk -v" to verify the current state of your software installation. - Run "lslpp -h | grep BROKEN" to check for PTFs that are not currently installed correctly. If any are listed, you must reinstall the BROKEN PTFs using the Apply/Commit/No Save (-acN) flags. o If you choose to use the "ALTERNATE save directory" (-t flag) feature of install: - If the alternate save directory is NFS mounted from another system, ensure that NFS is running on your system and that the root user has write permission. o Shutdown AIX-Windows prior to starting the update process. o Shutdown SNA prior to starting the update process. o Shutdown Netware prior to starting the update process. o The 3.2.5 Update contains updates for products you may not have installed. If you choose to install ALL updates, and you do not have all products installed, you will receive error messages. If this occurs, and you installed using SMIT, SMIT will indicate that your install failed. o Be absolutely sure that the upgrade to 3.2.5 completed successfully and that the bosboot command ran success- fully before rebooting your system. | TIPS & HINTS FOR AIX 3.2.5 AND PMP 3251 | Access to InforExplorer | After installing AIX 3.2.5 Enhancement 5 or updating to PMP | 3251, perform the following steps as root to enable access | to InfoExplorer databases from CD-ROM or disk. | cd /usr/lpp/info/data | mv ispaths ispaths.orig | cp -p ispaths.full ispaths AIX 3.2.5 Installation Tips 3 12/21/95 | For additional information on accessing InfoExplorer data- | bases from CD-ROM, refer to the AIX Version 3.2 Installation | Guide. | Lexical Error Installing U437028 | Around the AIX 3.2.3 time-frame, a change was made to the | installp command to support an enhanced installation media | table of contents (TOC) format. Due to this change, it is | possible for installation of PTF U437028 to fail with a | "lexical error" when installing on systems with a very early | level of the Application Installation Utilities. This | occurs because the PMP 3251 and AIX 3.2.5 Enhancement 5 | media use the enhanced TOC format. | To avoid this problem, check the level of Application | Installation Utilities installed on your system, using the | command: | lslpp -lB U411711 | If the output of the lslpp command indicates that U411711 is | not installed, you will need to order U437028 as a service | update from FixDist from the IBM Support Center. U437028 can | be installed on this level system when ordered as a service | update, since the installation media TOC will be in the | older format. | LED 888 in Service Mode | A problem has been discovered that causes some 7013 models | with a GXT150M graphics adapter installed, to hang during | boot in service mode with 888 in the LEDs. This problem has | been isolated to a GXT150M diagnostic test routine. The | system boots without problems in normal mode, and all diag- | nostic functions perform correctlty. Standalone diagnostics | from diskette or CD-ROM also perform correctly. A fix for | this problem is currently being investigated. This tip will | be updated as further information about the fix becomes | available. | Netware 3.11B | When attempting to install U493251 on a system running | Netware 3.11B, the installation can fail due to missing req- | uisites for PTFs U431457 and U431458. This problem is | caused by Netware PTFs that are already applied to the | system. To test for this condition, run the following | command: | ifreqs | tee /tmp/ireqs.out | The ifreqs command will run for several minutes. If the | ifreqs command output includes lines that end with either | U431457 or U431458, run the following commands as root to | correct the condition: AIX 3.2.5 Installation Tips 4 12/21/95 | ODMDIR=/usr/lib/objrepos | odmget -q 'ptf LIKE U43021[67]' product | \ | sed 's/m=0 p=U431457/m=1 p=U431457/ | s/m=0 p=U431458/m=1 p=U431458/' >/tmp/nw.add | odmdelete -q 'ptf LIKE U43021[67]' -o product | odmadd /tmp/nw.add | ODMDIR=/etc/objrepos | Requisite Check Fails on U491191 | Requisite checking for PTF U491191 can fail with later | levels of SNA Services installed. This problem occurs due to | requisites to an older base level of SNA Services, an is | fixed in PTF U437838. | Updating the N40 | This package should not be used to update the 7007 model N40 | notebook.
