ABOUT THIS DOCUMENT This document contains installation tips for AIX 3.2.4 that may not be documented in the 3.2.4 Release Notes. This doc- ument will be updated as new tips become available. UPGRADING FROM 3.1.5 Upgrading from any level of AIX 3.1 to AIX 3.2.4 is much the same process as upgrading to AIX 3.2. o You must be at the 3.1.5 level or higher (2006, 2007...). o Reinstallation is required. You cannot simply upgrade through smit. o You can install AIX 3.2.4 directly without first installing AIX 3.2. o You can still use the upgrade utilities to save some configuration information. The upgrade utilities guide and diskette can be obtained through your point of sale by ordering form number SC23-2441. o You cannot install from a Preventive Maintenance Package (PMP) tape. You must order a Product tape by calling 1-800-879-2755. UPGRADING FROM 3.2 Upgrading from any level of 3.2 is simply a matter of applying the subsystem PTFs. Follow the instructions pro- vided with your media, with emphasis on the following. o Make sure you have a current system backup. Refer to the "Backing Up Your System" section of the Installation Guide for specific instructions. o Reinstallation is NOT necessary unless you do not have the minimum amount of free space necessary to install the update. AIX 3.2.4 Installation Tips 1 11/29/94 o Your previous configuration is preserved. INSTALLATION TIPS o Backup your system! o Make sure that /usr/lpp/info/$LANG/aixmin is writable by root. The error message posted if this directory is not writable indicates that /usr/lib/info/$LANG is not writ- able. Refer to step 4 of the "LIMITED DISK SPACE PROCE- DURE" in your installation instructions for detailed procedures. o Check the state of existing PTFs on your system prior to starting the installation of the 3.2.4 update. | - Run "lslpp -h | grep BROKEN" to check for PTFs that are not currently installed correctly. If any are listed, you must reinstall the BROKEN PTFs using the Apply/Commit/No Save (-acN) flags. o If you choose to use the "ALTERNATE save directory" (-t flag) feature of install: - If the alternate save directory is NFS mounted from another system, ensure that NFS is running on your system and that the root user has write permission. o You must install the Application Installation Utilities subsystem (U418283) before you attempt to use the Copy Software to Hard Disk for Future Installation (bffcreate) procedure. o Shutdown AIXwindows prior to starting the update process. o Disregard this tip if you are upgrading from an AIX 3.2.4 Preventive Maintenance Package (PMP), since installation images of upgraded LPPs are not available on the PMP media. If you intend to replace existing LPPs with upgraded versions (such as AIXwindows 1.2.3 or Motif 1.2) while upgrading to 3.2.4, use the following procedure. Detailed instructions for each step are shipped with your media. - Install the Application Installation Utilities sub- system (U418283). - Install the upgraded versions of at least the same Program Products that are currently installed on your system. You MUST replace all currently installed portions of the product for the following steps to complete sucessfully. - Install the AIX Maintenance Level (U493240). o Disregard this tip if you are upgrading from an AIX 3.2.4 Preventive Maintenance Package (PMP), since AIX 3.2.4 Installation Tips 2 11/29/94 installation images of upgraded LPPs are not available on the PMP media. If you currently have Distributed Computing Environment (DCE) installed, you'll need to upgrade to DCE version 1.2 as part of the 3.2.4 upgrade. o Using the AIX Update Advisor (update_all) can reduce the overall disk space requirements of the update process to as little as 4 megabytes depending upon the amount of space that can be recovered by ptfdir_clean. o The installation of U418438 (txtfmt.ts.obj) can fail with either the "Limited Disk Space" or "Unlimited Disk Space" installation procedures if the LANG environment variable is not C, En_US, or Ja_JP. To avoid this problem, execute the following commands prior to starting the update process. LANG=C export LANG If installation of U418438 has already failed, execute the following commands to successfully install the update. rm /usr/lib/ps/ditroff.font/ts.fontdirs LANG=C export LANG installp -gacXNd txtfmt.ts.obj 3.2.0.0.U418438 | CHECK THE INSTALLATION AFTER COMPLETION | Make sure that the 3.2.4 installation was successful BEFORE | you attempt to reboot the machine after the install is com- | pleted.
